I’m a sophomore in a gifted/talented high school and I’m taking Organic Chemistry I right now. Next year, I’ll complete OC II, and I’m wondering if I should take the ACS Organic Chemistry Exam. So far as I can see, we cover the same material as most universities. Is there any reason why I would want to take the exam (e.g. Get out of orgy chem in college) and could doing poorly on the exam hurt me? If I were to decide to take it, where would I take it?

As far as I know only the AP test can get you out of college courses. Taking the ACS Org Chem exam should not hurt or help you either way….it will look good but I doubt any college will care how you did since getting into a bachelor’s program is different than a graduate program (and the only people who would care is the Chem program).

I don’t think you will get out of org chem in college (if you still need it)…but you can always take it to see how you will do. It is a pretty easy exam they use it as qualifiers at the beginning of grad programs (a check to see if you need to do remedial work).

Also, I doubt you had an organic chem lab (could be wrong) and that will be required either way.
