Where to source organic/recycled holiday gift wrap?

   Don’t buy or use any gift wrapping paper. If you take the newspaper, you can wrap gifts with that. Brown paper grocery bags make nice gift wrap as does old fashioned green bar computer printer paper. Your can make pretty pompom style bows out of plastic grocery bags. Wrap a gift with a beach towel which can be used next summer. Better yet, just put the gift in a box and tie with some ribbon or elastic hair headbands. After Christmas store the boxes and reuse them next year. If you receive gifts with wrapping paper, recycle the paper to line your shelves and drawers.

   Use gift bags – that way your friends and family ultimately just keeping giving and getting the same gift bags year after year – so that no-one needs to waste $$ or resources on wrapping paper. Other suggestions are using newspaper (and decorating it if you feel extra motivated) – or towels/cloth/T-shirts, or if you really want to get clever, don’t wrap presents, hide them and put together sheet of clues or a treasure map leading to them.

   Recycle fabric you can get from the thrift stores. Old dresses and such even come with ribbons and bows that can be reused over and over. It’s fun, we have this one fabric that is wrapped around a joke gift… like a white elephant gift. It’s always the first present opened no matter who gets it, and it starts the day off well with laughter and good will.

   We have been using gift fabrics over and over now for 12 years. X-mas and birthdays keep it in the family, but you can start a new trend with gifts to friends for other events too.

   There is more fabric colors, designs and patterns than there ever was wrapping paper. Even though it can be super cheap, it looks expensive and beautiful.

   You can use your imagination, a newspaper funnies works, already read, make a handy wrapper…or use the persons favorite section, gardening tips etc. Used books can make interesting wraps also try using store bags, tape them to the box and wella, a wrapping. Get creative, draw on the newspaper after you wrap the present. Another fun wrapping could be boxes that contained oats, decorated as a drum, or a person. wrapping can be easy if you reuse the last years paper, bows etc. we make a game out of recycling cards, bows and ribbons.

   Fabric is a good idea; if you live near a city, see if it has a Freecycle webgroup to join and you can post a request to people in the group to give you usable, yet old fabric that they would normally throw out. Old flannel sheets would be good and quick; cut a large section for the gift, gather the edges up at the top and tie with some twine. Makes a good dust rag after unwrapping.

   Gift bag it; get the recycled tissue, and the colored plastic bags. Or get the plain, brown shopping bags and glue the fronts of the holiday cards you received last year to the bags as decoration.

   This could also work with regular paper; go to Walgreens or somewhere like that and buy recycled brown craft paper (used for shipping). Then glue the fronts of previously received greeting cards to the top of the package after wrapping with the kraft paper.

   Don’t know any websites, but try using old newspapers, fabric, old maps (looks great), cereal boxes (you can create a new box with the cardboard), old yogurt containers (cover ‘em, paint ‘em or glitter ‘em).
